Games we like, and some we don’t

On watching the Gadget Show (Ch5) last night I became quite interested in the idea of Augmented Reality. The idea being you can do some very clever image recognition techniques to bring the virtual world into the real world. Already this concept is very promising for the video games industry, but it has also been used successfully in other ways, including the new smart phone G1, powered by Google Android.

This morning I also saw a brand using a standard PC webcam to create amazing greetings messages.
The leading research team on the technology is a company called Total Immersion, who have some pretty impressive videos on their website.
Certainly a technology to keep an eye on.

Some amazing work by Red Bull. Create a plane, view other’s planes, and play with it in a 3D game. The only downside is I don’t think you can print out what you have made.

This is a nice site to promote a ski resort. The site is usable, fun and engaging. The game is simple but works. The site is promoted with advertising banners, which in themselves are microsites, allowing you to send customised video cards to friends, view ski conditions and enter contests all within the ad space.

Nice viral game/microsite for Audi. It’s in Spanish, but easy to find the game, and play. Simply click the obstacles in time to prevent the Audi crashing. The idea is to get as far as you can. I thought the game was fun, quite addictive and fits in well with the TV ads.

Try and solve 11 puzzles hidden in 11 segments of the new Guinness ad to piece it together and release it to the world. The first person to do so gets a solid gold domino. I like the concept, but maybe too slimilar to the new Stella Artois website launched recently, and I would suggest maybe too hard for the average user to really bother with.
